What Actually Happens in a Bach-Reiki Session

If you have never had energy work before, booking a two and a half hour session with a stranger is a lot to ask on faith. So here is exactly what happens, in order, with nothing left vague.

Before anything else

You do not have to tell me what you have been through. Not at the start, not later, not ever.

I say this first because it is the question behind most people's hesitation. Both Reiki and Bach Flower work bypass the need to talk through your history. Your traumas are yours. I will not pry, and I do not need to know.

What I do need is for you to tell me where the discomfort is and how it rates out of ten. That is it. That is the whole conversation we need to have.

Step one: choosing the area

We pick one area of pain or discomfort. One, not several.

People sometimes want to tackle everything at once, and I understand the impulse, but here is my reasoning. Say the pain sits in your right shoulder. In my understanding, that one area may hold an accumulation built up over a long time, made up of many different emotional states. It takes time to move through. Trying to work on five areas in one afternoon does not speed anything up, it just leaves you with more to process than you can reasonably handle.

Slower is kinder.

Step two: the Bach Flower application

I apply the chosen Bach Flower remedy topically, directly to the area we are working on.

If the area is somewhere private, you apply it yourself in the en-suite bathroom next to the Healing Room. There is no awkwardness about this and no need to explain.

Step three: the Reiki

Then the Reiki session begins.

You stay fully clothed and lie on the healing couch. My hands either rest lightly on your body or hover just above it. There is no pressure, no manipulation and no massage at any point.

In my experience, applying Reiki after a topical Bach Flower application deepens the effect of both. That sequencing is the whole basis of how I work.

What people commonly feel

Everyone is different, but these come up often:

•      Deep relaxation, warmth, a sense of peace. Falling asleep is extremely common and nothing to apologise for.

•      Sensations of heat, coolness or tingling where my hands are. Completely normal.

•      Emotional responses, sometimes tears. Old memories or patterns can surface. This is part of the process, not a problem with it.

•      Afterwards, some people feel energised and refreshed. Others feel calm, quiet or pleasantly sleepy.

There is no correct experience. Whatever you feel is what you feel.

If the pain moves

Occasionally, though it is rare, the discomfort shifts to a different part of the body during the session.

The way I explain it is this. Imagine your body as a trifle, layer upon layer, with the discomfort sitting at the very bottom. What we are doing is helping it find a route to the surface and then out beyond it, through the energetic field around you.

Sometimes on the way it moves sideways.

Not the most elegant image, but it is the one that makes sense to people.

If it does move, we follow it and apply a second remedy. This only works if you tell me what is happening, which is why the running commentary and the out of ten rating matter so much.

The Bach Flower consultation

If you have booked the full Bach-Reiki package, this comes after the Reiki.

I use the ABC method taught to me by Ainsworths of London, a homeopathic and Bach Flower manufacturer founded in 1974. It is a simple process. Your own intuition selects the remedy. My job is to explain what the plants you chose are saying, as a story with a beginning, a middle, and where you are now.

I will not know what that story means to you. I will not know which lesson it is pointing to. That is yours to sit with, and I simply encourage you to listen to yourself.

I prepare your remedy and I am with you when you take it for the first time.

You leave with two things: a topical lotion and a Bach Flower remedy taken as drops by mouth. Both are included in the package price.

Afterwards

Some people notice relief within minutes. For others it takes a few days or a few weeks. Some notice very little the first time. Results genuinely do vary and I will never tell you otherwise.

The one thing I would encourage is giving yourself a quiet evening afterwards if you can. Meditation helped me hold onto how I felt after a session, and it may help you too.

Practical details

Sessions take place at the Healing Room in Warminster. The full Reiki and Bach Flowers session runs two and a half hours. If you would rather ask questions before committing to anything, the fifteen-minute consultation is free and there is no obligation at the end of it.
