Ready, Willing and Able: How to Know If It Is Time

There is a phrase used a lot in the holistic world. To release something you have been carrying, it helps to be ready, willing and able.

It sounds like a slogan. It is not. It is the single most useful thing anyone told me, and I want to explain why, because I think it takes an enormous amount of pressure off.

You can want something and still not be ready

Here is the uncomfortable bit. You can genuinely want to let go of something, book the appointment, turn up with the best intentions, and find that some part of you is still holding on.

That is not failure. It is information.

Somewhere underneath, you may have made a decision to keep hold of it for now. And that is completely okay. There is usually a reason, and the reason is usually protective. Whatever you built to cope with something difficult, you built because you needed it at the time.

I mention this at the start because I would rather you knew than sat there wondering what was wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. Timing is real.

What each of the three actually means

Ready is about timing. Not "should I be over this by now", but whether this is the moment you can give it your attention.

Willing is the big one. Willing means you are prepared to look at your part in it. Not to blame yourself, which is a different thing entirely and not useful. But to be curious about your own patterns, your own coping mechanisms, the rules you made and never revisited.

Able is largely about the mental space you can create. When I booked my own first Reiki appointment I was not sure of much, but I was open-minded, and I had decided in advance that I was going to see what happened without fighting it. That decision was the "able" part.

How I knew

I woke up one day and realised something that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. I had chosen to carry every hurt that had been done to me that I was not willing to forgive, let alone forget.

Chosen. That was the word that landed.

I had never thought of it as a choice. It had always felt like something that had happened to me and simply stayed. But once I saw it as something I was actively doing, a second thought followed straight after: if I could choose to carry it, could I choose to put it down?

I had no idea what would happen. I lay on that Reiki couch with no expectations, only a decision that I did not want to carry the weight of my chronic pain a second longer. I wanted to see what a version of me without all of it might look like.

That was the beginning.

Ask yourself, honestly

You do not need to answer these for me. You will never need to tell me anything about what you have been through, at any point. This is for you.

•      Am I willing to look at my own patterns, not just other people's behaviour?

•      Am I holding onto something because it still protects me, or out of habit?

•      Are the rules I made to keep myself safe still helping, or are they now the thing keeping me stuck?

•      Can I give this a bit of space over the coming weeks, or is life too full right now?

If the answers are mostly no, that is a genuinely useful outcome. Come back when the timing is better. Nothing is lost.

Why I would rather you waited

I do not offer a quick fix and I would not want to. This work is a commitment to yourself, and part of it is being brave enough to look inward.

That is also why I only work with one area of discomfort per session. If years of held emotion are going to shift, you need room to re-process what comes up. Trying to do everything at once tends to help no-one.

Learning to meditate helped me enormously here. Not as a technique, just as a way of becoming present enough to notice changes in myself and hold onto how I felt after a session.

If you are somewhere between ready and not sure, the free fifteen-minute consultation exists exactly for that. It is a conversation, not a commitment.
